fuel pump on 4.3 merc

how hard is it to replace the fuel pump i get the pump tomorrow for my 87 4.3 v6 merc, is there any thing i need to watch out for why changing them out

Use what are called"Flare /tubing/ line wrenches "
Never an open end or vise-grips

The fuel pump drive rod will fall down it can be a pain.

so is this something someone can do that has never worked on boats before my granddad is going to help he use to work wit old motors that had manual pumps is this bout the same, also the reason i am replaceing is cause the boat is going for a bit then it acts like it is running out of gas, guy that works on boat drove it up at the lake an said it was the pump, i have already replaced tank gas lines filters an plugs an wires, so he saying fuel pump what do you all think

Make sure the "guy that works on boat" pays for it if that's not the solution. There's nothing cheaper than a proper diagnosis. Test the pump before you buy another.
