Fuel pump or something else? 35hp evinrude

So during my last fishing expedition my 1977 35hp evinrude ob started to act crazy. first it took ALOT longer than usual to get her to start (15-20 turns in stead of 2-4)then while letting it warm up, it would (sneeze?) and die. then while i was running it at roughly 1/4 throttle it would start to die then rev back up then try to die again then rev up, you get the idea. its the same thing it does when i run it dry in the tank. only if i primed the bulb on the fuel line would it restart. i did pump the bulb while running it, but not sure if it made a difference. when i took the fuel pump off it looks to be in pretty good condition, no punctures or anything.

side notes: there was good gas in the tank, the tank was vented. the carb is clean and clear, new fuel lines inside and out, new fuel filter.

does this sound like a fuel pump problem?

If you pumped the bulb and it had no effect, then it is probably not the fuel pump. Look for any fuel leaking from the fuel pump.

Sneezing is a lean condition. It could damage the engine, so I would get this fixed before going back out on the water.

In the driveway, Pump the bulb and look for leaks. Sure sounds like a sticking float valve though.

thanks dargel, i think that when i pumped the bulb it did make a difference, not to contradict myself. after it died if i tried to restart without pumping the bulb a few times it would just turnover and never fire up. i replaced the needle, seat and float on the carb less than a year ago, i hope that its not causing problems already. i bought a back up just in case though.

Cool, Look close at the fuel pump for leaks. If the diaphram has ruptured, you will see fuel coming out of a weep hole on the pump body. Good Luck
