Fuel Pump Problems

I have a 1989 Force 125 that starts well when cold runs well at WOT stalls at idle sometimes and is a bear to restart. I found one of the screws holding the fuel pump on missing and when running fuel was leaking out of the hole. I fixed the problem, new screw and it ran better but still impossible to restart. I then took a look around the screw while pumping my primer bulb, now fuel is leaking from the gasket where the screw was missing. Primer get's hard but when I go to restart I have to pump it again 7 or 8 time. My question to the experts is could this fuel leak cause the bad idle and difficult restarts? I have orderd a new gasket and diaphram..

Not sure about the restarting, but idle (low rpm) pump is struggling to pump fuel cause the air is coming in through the gasket. New fuel pump kit was a good call, leaking fuel under the cowl could go boom!

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

If you have a two stage pump I would suggest only replacing the diaphram and gasket. The fuel seat gaskets on the kit I got from napa would not go around the spring side of the seats. Who ever did them before me used permatex on the press fit seats and I had to beat the hell out of it and broke it. The seats are tough to find as well as the correct gaskets. If you do choose to change these seats and need the correct gaskets or even the fuel seats post it here and I will send you a link where you can get them.

Hey Eurolarva, I can't remember where I read this but, one of those check valves cannot be removed. If it is, you have to replace the fuel pump.

Hey scotney. Two are press fit one has two screws holding it in. My manual says to pull all three out and replace gaskets. I had to because I could see both gaskets were broken. When I busted the seat everybody I talked to said the same thing you are saying. I found the new seats on line and the gaskets I ordered for them fit. I put the whole thing together and it runs better now than it has in the five years since I bought it. Twin city outboard is 60 miles from my house. When I showed it to them they said it needed to be replaced. The hardest part was getting the permatex out. It was the old style that hardens. If you need these seats or gaskets here is the link<br /> http://www.mercruiserparts.com/SelectModelType3.asp?class_id=2

The verdict, had the gasket and diaphram overnighted $35 shipping $5 parts. Took 2 stage fuel pump apart and replaced both items noticed that one of the screws holding the fuel pump on was the wrong size, long story short got another 1/4 screw now we have six of the same put pump together tightend her up with lock washers as they have a tendency due to vibration to come loose. pumped the primer bulb and all worked well after a few attempts to start. Diaphram had no holes but was badly stretched.

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

Glad to hear the pump works. Amazing that something so cheap (minus nasty shipping charges) can make an engine run like new. If the screws come loose again you might try medium strength lock tight on the threads. I am curious did the gasket for the valve seat fit. Did your rebuild kit come with three of these gaskets. I could not get the gasket around the spring side on mine. Just curious

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

I was only able to get the diaphram and the gasket that seals that area, the others were out of stock, and that was the area that was leaking . The area by the engine was fine. My old diaphram had no holes but was stretched out and was not sealing properly. I
