I am looking at old block and there is a push rod type thing in the block that i believe engages the fuel pump arm. Am I missng something because I don't see this rod. I had the motor running but it isnt getting fuel. Any help out there. This is it before this engine is reinstalled and I can enjoy my long awaited weekend!!!! Bobby

Are you saying that there is no fuel pump pushrod in the new motor? If not, you have to take it out of the old motor and install it in the new one. That rod rides on the camshaft. If you can get a socket on the crankshaft and turn the motor by hand, you'll find the spot on the cam where the rod slides furthest up in the block. This will make it easier to install the pump. I usually put some heavy grease on the rod to keep it in place while I install the pump. The other option is to take the bolt out of the front of the block that gives access to that channel the rod rides in. You can use a tool to hold the rod in place or even a longer bolt LIGHTLY tightened to hold it in place.

okay so on the old block if i unscrew the bolt under where the fuel pump goes on I can ge this out and then I can take bolt off of new block and push it in n then hold it up as high as I canget it (with moving crank tofindthe spot) thn ensure that the arm on fuel pump ges under and then bolt back on.. Sound about right?... I neve thoughttwice about this one. I would have thought it wouls have came on the new block.

Re: Fuel pump push rod --- not there???

Rebuilt engines never come with the fuel pump pushrod because many people run an electric pump, not a mechanical pump. If you look at the old block, there is a plug in line with the pushrod. Take this out and the rod drops out from the bottom of the block. The other bolt I am referring to is horizontal, perpendicular to the rod. It serves merely to keep oil from shooting out of the engine. If you remove it to help install the fuel pump push rod, you have to replace it before you fire the engine. You don't have to remove that bolt form the front of the block, but if you find that the rod keeps dropping as you install the pump, you may want to give it a try.

You have to remove the pipe plug under the fuel pump to get the rod pump out or in. I think it's 5/16" square on the plug. Shouldn't be all that tight. But like v8 said grease on the rod with it against the cam, quickly install the pump!

I guess rookie mistake on my part big time..... but I learn quick! All is complete!! Engine is Starting and runs and sounds real good. You guys have all been a big help. I have never worked with engines before this rebuild. I had a friend helpin but asked him to "let me learn" I have learned alot and I am sure that when I re install this engine I will "learn some more. But for the engine it is done. Anyone on the Tennessee River near Huntsville Alabama look me up! Bobby Judge
