Fuel pump question

I have a 1990 70 hp johnson.

It runs very well. Briefly!

It starts and runs, but acts like it is running out of gas. If I pump the primer ball on the fuel line it runs perfect. I pulled the fuel line from the top carb and started the motor--nothing came through the fuel line.

When I pump the ball. fuel comes right through.

This only started Saturday--before that it was fine. I am 99% sure my fuel pump has gone belly up. Is there anyway for me to test it? If it is bad can it be rebuilt or does it have to be replaced?

At first I thought I may have a leak in the fuel line, but I have not been able to find one.

bad fuel pump. You tested it when you were pumping the ball :)

Not always...
does the ball pump up firm? The fuel system could be sucking air.

The fuel pump rebuild kits are only about 20 bucks.

If it was sucking air wouldn't there still be some fuel coming out when he removed the fuel line from the carb?

Re: Fuel pump question

the ball does not stay firm and when it runs it gets softer and softer--till the motor dies, lol.

Thanks for affirming what I thought. I am going out side now the see how hard it is to get the fuewl pump off.

Re: Fuel pump question

Are you still using the VRO2 pump? If so it will probably cost more than $20 to rebuild. It would probably be a good time to upgrade to the latest OMS pump.
