I have ordered a couple of fuel pump kits for my 1980 50 hp merc. I took the old ones off today to see what I was dealing with. I was expecting to find a small spring between parts # 2 and #3 in my attached photo but I did not find one. I checked the pump on the other other carb and it was identical. So the question is, should there be a spring in the fuel pumps or does the elasticity in the rubber baffle serve that purpose?
The only difference in the two pumps was that the base and parts # 4 and # 5 were wet in the bottom carb but the same parts on the top carb were dry.
The engine starts but will not run for more than 30 seconds without squeezing the bulb.
