I am about to install a Navman fuel flow transducer to my boat powered by a Johnson 90HP 1989 J90TLCEM. The VRO was disconnected on this motor when I purchased it and has been replaced with a pulse type pump, which has lead me to question this pumps ability to supply suitable fuel flow/pressure when the supply line will be further restricted with the addition of the transducer and a fuel filter/water separator(as reqd by the installation manual) Currently the only filter installed is the mesh filter in the pump. Fuel tanks are twin 6Gal portables. I am looking at maybe installing a non-VRO fuel pump (the one at looks like the original VRO) to supply a higher pressure or do you think the pulse type currently fitted would be sufficient for the job.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Fuel Pump Questions Johnson 90HP

The pulse pump works fine, they have used that pump for up to 140hp motors.

To check for excessive fuel restriction, hook up a vacuum gauge with a " T " fitting to the fuel pump inlet nipple. Run the motor at all speeds and make sure it does not exceed 4" Hg on the gauge. Use a piece of clear hose and check that there are no air bubbles in the fuel system when running.
