After running my 1989 Merc 3.0L a few times now, (mostly at idle) I have noticed my fresh oil change smells a little like it has some fuel in it. I thinking I may need a new fuel pump. From what I understand, it's the most common cause of fuel in your oil. Unless you guys have any better ideas as to how this could happen.

So, my options are the obvious. What brand of fuel pump do you guys recommend. Sierra is cheapest, but some people give them bad reviews. Carters are a little more expensive, unless the Sierra's are also made by Carter? Not sure.

The other option is to convert to an electric fuel pump. Is there a specific Merc 3.0L electric fuel pump conversion kit out there that dependable?

Use any of them, they should be fine for your application. Probably won't have the boat long enough to wear the new one out.

If you go electric, need to do some wiring changes to accommodate an oil pressure switch to turn pump off if you loose oil pressure. I would suggest the Holley Blue marine pump, just my preference. Carter makes good pumps

Believe it or not, they still sell a rebuild kit for those pumps. I recently rebuilt mine and it works great. Very easy to do. Here's the part number is you care to look at the kit: #49089
