fuel pump relacement help on johnson 9.9

I have a 9.9 hp johnson outbaord, just bought second hand...runs when pumping gas primer, else it cuts out..am I best get new fuel pump or just the kit? Is replacing the pump easy..or the kit easy? I am fairly mechanically inclined, having worked on my old volvo car engine often enough!
Any tips on how to do these things appreciated.

could be fuel pump, carb kit, or air leak in fuel line.

Ethanol and fuel lines
replace all fuel line with Alcohol resistant lines. Ethanol deteriorates, the rubber lines, then they start to sluff off on the inside, going directly to the carbs. Settling to the bottom of the bowl. Contaminating the carbs high speed jets. clean a rebuild carbs, flushing fuel line before connecting to carbs.

thanks for reply, also do you know what year my engine would be? the model # : 10R78M and serila # c8008719 and are they all 2 strokes from that era or 4 strokes as well! I dont know if mine is a 2 or 4 stroke..excuse my ignorance, just starting off!

It's a 2 stroke - 1978. The small square fuel pumps can be rebuilt with a kit: http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Rebuilding_fuelpump.htm

The rebuild kit attributed to NAPA in the article is a Sierra Kit and SIerra part number 18-7823.

If you have the earlier 5 sided fuel pump, the rebuild kit is Sierra part # 18-7820.
