Hi: I have a 1988 Evinrude 2.5 hp. I was wondering if I should change the fuel pump on it. I don't know the past history of this motor and it has trouble staying running only after a short time inless I keep squizing the fuel bulb. How and what does the fuel pump on this small motor look like anyway? Is it just a simple diafram type or what? Any info would be helpfull, Thanks, Dan.

Re: fuel pump replacement

Not sure if you've looked at unscrewing the pressure release valve on your fuel tank or not.I had a 15 ft Chrysler that would never run more than 5 or 10 mins before it would die. Took a buddy out in it and sure enough it stopped running. He bent down and unscrewed the pressure relief valve on the fuel tank and we were off and running again. The boat was red and so was my face!!

Dan...whoderr probably hit it on the head. But, if that don't work, check the primer bulb for check vlvs that have fallen apart. Remove the bulb from the fuel line. Notice the direction of the arrow. Squeeze the bulb. Air should rush out the end the arrow is pointing to. Release and opposite end should suck air in.

If the bulb is OK and the tank vent is open, look for lose hose fitting.

The fuel pump will be attached to the side of the engine block. Simple affair. Works off the vacuum and pressure off the block against a diaphram.

Just follow the the fuel line to it. Rebuild kits are available for these pumps.

Keep us posted to your progress...Thanks.

Re: fuel pump replacement

I have a 6hp sea horse. I have the exact same problem with mine, it would'nt start when I first bought it because the black cog was worn out. I replaced the cog to find that the engine woundn't start when it did it would run for a couple of minutes and then die. The guy I bought it off hadn't got a water tank so when I asked to see it running he only started it and didn't leave it run. I would never but an engine that started and didn't run! so we decided it was worth the money to leave the carb in to get it cleaned after we saw the filth in it. that didn't solve the problem! so after about a month I finaly talked my dad into spending money on a new fuel pump, which I thought would be about €15 so today I went out with my brother about 20 mile to a specialist shop to but a pump. When we got there we found that the pumps were actually €91!!! we are going to fit the pump tonight and HOPEFULY! the engine should run fine. I'll write back soon to tell you what happened.
