fuel pump/vro confusion

I have an 89 OMC 140 seadrive. My mechanic disconnected and plugged the VRO after a rebuild last year.

Since I bought the boat I have what I think are fuel starvation problems and now I am to the point that I am thinking of replacing or rebuilding my fuel pump. I read through a few posts here and I am now under the impression that my VRO may also act as the fuel pump.

Is this is true? If so, should I rebuild the VRO or do I purchase a non-VRO pump?

Re: fuel pump/vro confusion

The oil injection pump has two chambers. One pumps fuel, the other pumps oil. If the system was disconnected, then only the fuel pump side is working.

So, yes, the old oil injection pump may be used as a fuel pump only.

Is it worth it to rebuild this pump, or should I just buy a replacement of this pump, or buy a non-VRO pump?

rboat,
i just had a vro/fuel pump go bad on my 89 120 evinrude. replacement cost was near 300 dollars for a vro or just 129 for a replacement fuel pump. you have to take your gas cap off to put gas in so why not put your premix oil in as well and save a few hundred dollars.

The choice is yours,rboat99! Either way works.Premix always did.The advantage of the VRO Pump is that is variable.50 to 1 at full speed, lots less at idle.Less loading up,bogging down.
DHP

does the $129 fuel pump mount up the same way as the vro/fuel pump or do I have to make some other mods?

I beleive there is a bracket that needs to be fabricated for the fuel only replacement. But it supposed to be no big deal. Others have done it and hopefully they will chime in..

rboat,
the fuel pump replacement i bought actually used the mounting bracket from the old vro. not sure if that may be the same case as yours but it wont take much modification if it dont

Re: fuel pump/vro confusion

I picked one up Monday and installed it yesterday. I was able to use the mounting bracket from the old unit as truax said.

The only problem I had was with the threadlock solution I bought to put on the pulse limiter (flame arrestor). I put some of that stuff on, started to thread it in the block, but then had to stop to take care of some other things (honey-do's). I thought I cleaned all of the threadlock off but apparently there was still some left. When I went to thread the pulse limiter in the next day I could not get it to go, no matter how much cleaning and brushing I did.

I finally got frustrated and took it to a mechanic down the street and he ran a thread tap through and helped me get it in.

After overcoming that stupid mistake everything else went smoothly, can't wait to try it out this weekend! Thanks guys for all of your help!
