I have a 70 hp johnson. Behind the fuel pump there is a hole and there is fuel spitting out. Is there something wrong with the pump?

Yes. The diaphragm is torn. I don't know if rebuild kits are still available, but they were a pain in the _ _ _ and you're better off with a replacement pump. 10 minute job. :)

Re: fuel pump

From your profile you have a 1978 Johnson 70hp. If this is correct then Sierra fuel pump rebuild kit 18-7820 available here on Iboats for $9.84. New fuel pumps cost about 35 dollars. I rebuilt mine and except for forgetting to use gasket sealer the first time (thought rubber diaphram was enough to seal) it was not particularly difficult. Took about 1/2 hour with most of that time spent cleaning off old gasket material. Just be careful not to loose the small poppet parts that come in the kit. Also be sure to note down the order of the parts when disassembling. I keep a spare kit. Not that I've needed it, but at the price why not.
