I have a question regarding my fuel pump. We were out yesterday and I noticed a strong gas smell. I opened the engine hatch and seen a lot of gas dripping from the fuel pump. I could not locate the origin of the leak. I left the hatch off and went for the dock. My pump does not have the hose going to the carb to unload gas if a problem happens like this. Did the owner before me put an auto pump on or is it just that my boat is so old it was not offered. Also what would the benefit be of going to an electronic fuel pump if any? Do they offer rebuild kits for these pumps? I stopped by the marine shop and they had one for 175$. I thought that I had seen them online for like 100-120$ so I passed and asked if they could get a rebuild kit. The lady looked at me kind of funny and said that the manufacture would not allow them to sell rebuild kits to customers that a certified marine tech had to do it. Well I was not born yesterday and have turned the wrenches on this boat from day one with a lot of help from every here at IBoats and was not about to let a little fuel pump slow me down. Needless to say I left empty handed, I planed on spending some money but was not easily humored by the lady?s comments or her knowledge of boats. "Not saying at all that women don't know anything my wife has proved me wrong more times then I have been right on our boat for the most part". Anyhow thanks in advance.

Re: Fuel Pump

Sounds like that is exactly what happened....auto fuel pump. I have a 1979 Imperial with the 140 Merc, and I have the tube going from the carb to the fuel pump. I think you were very lucky you were not hurt. I would just replace with the proper marine fuel pump if it was me and also be sure you have a marine carb on it. It looks like someone was watching over you......very scary.

Re: Fuel Pump

Carb is good to go. Its a rochester carb and referenced the numbers to the marine application. I will be getting a new pump here before long.

I am in the Edwardsville area, about 35 miles East of St. Louis MO. and about the same distance South from Litchfield IL. Where do go boating?

Re: Fuel Pump

i had my pump leakin too. mine was from the diaphram. i think ya got the same carter fuel pump i got on my 165. it is rebuildable. i got me a diaphram from the dealer and just did it up. with help from my mercruiser service manual.

like you, i have also ask the same question about the single diaphram type fuel pump used in this appliction. for 73, the oem service manual list 2 fuel pump types. one is the carter thats rebuildable, the other is non servicable and is dual diaphram w/ a sightglass.

i have wondered about the explosion issue myself. like i said, i leaked too. very dangerous. i have goten no satisfactory answer from anyone. i believe our fuel pumps are oem mercruiser. single diaphram, no j tube, no sight glass. must just be to old best i can figure for not haveing these features. the only thing that i have heard said about the marine version of this carter fuel pump and an auto one is perhaps the marine one has less pressure, 3.5-4.5psi. that was stated to me by my local mercruiser mech and i don't know that for a fact, but is as good a explination as i've heard. got that info while trying to pin him down as to weather i had a marine pump or not.......and i believe, we do.........

Re: Fuel Pump

They did not use bilge blowers untill enough Boats went boom

It is the same with the fuel pump and other parts as things were found to cause problems the HARD way they made them better

I would want the best dual diaphram with a tube run up to the carb as it has proven to be the safest thing they can come up with ;)
