Fuel pump???

Hello,
Just a quick question for you all. I just purchased a 1972 9.9 evinrude. I can get it to start fairly easily (2 or 3 pulls), but it will only run for about a minute or so and then dies. I've noticed that if, right as it starts to die, I squeeze the primer bulb from the gas tank, the engine keeps running fine. Do you think it's a possible fuel pump problem?

Check your model number. The 9.9 starts in 1974.

The fuel pump is suspect when continuing to squeeze the bulb keeps the engine running. Check for a fuel leak around the pump, and make sure that the gasket between the pump and the engine is airtight. You can usually keep the engine running by elevating the tank above the float bowl so that gravity takes over in place of the lift pump.

Be sure that the arrow on the primer bulb is pointing towards the engine.

Thanks for the info. I'll check that model number again, I just glanced at it this morning.
