I Have A 69 20hp Johnson That Runs Pretty Darn Good But It Bogs Down And Surges At Wot I Let Up And GO WOT AGAIN It Runs Good Again For A Little While. Could This Be The Fuel Pump Or Maybe The Carb? Is There A Rebuild Kit For This Year Fuel Pump? I Cant Find One!! Maybe Another Year Model Will Swap Out?

Re: Fuel Pump

I would first check to see if there are any restrictions in the fuel flow, from the fuel tank, to the carb and see that the fuel flows freely and also check and make sure that there are no air leaks in the lines too. Also check and make sure the fuel tank is venting properly. If this does not correct the problem, then I would then replace the fuel pump. Fuel pumps for these should be readily available here on iBoats or your loacal marine dealor. These are not the rebuildable type of fuel pump, just to let you know.

Re: Fuel Pump

Don't replace un-needed parts. If squeezing the primer bulb doesn't make it go, it isn't the fuel pump. Squeezing the bulb supplies gas to the motor, even if there were not fuel pump at all.

It could be the pump, but it could also be an air leak anywhere between the fuel pump and the gas level in the tank. Even a pin-hole leak can cause it to suck air instead of fuel. Don't ignore a leak at the little pins that are pushed in when you attach the hose to the tank.

EDIT: Some of those small square pumps of the '60s had rubber flapper valves instead of "real" check valves. Those pumps were crap when new and are not rebuildable. Nor should they be. If any of them need to be replaced, those are a good example.
