I have a 1979 80hp 4cyl Merc that I am havin a fuel problem with.If I take the hose off to the fuel strainer (screen)in the side of the motor I can squeeze the bulb and have fuel there but when I try to start it the plugs are bone dry.If I squirt a little fuel in a couple cyl threw the spark plug hole it will fire right up.I am thinkin it has to be the pump. Is there 2 fuel pumps on this or is it right behind the fuel screen. I have a manual but it is no help. Thank you for reading this and your help in advance.

Re: Fuel Pump

The parts diaghram shows a single fuel pump under the fuel strainer. if the pump is working properly, you should be able to pump fuel right thru it, with the primer bulb. Disconect the hose between the carbs and the fuel pump and see if you can pump fuel. The next step is to see if the carb bowls are full. Remove the center brass plug in the base of the bowl. Fuel should pour out as you pump primer. If no fuel in carb, maybe float is stuck, but time to open carbs up and see...

Re: Fuel Pump

Thanks Chris for the help.Well I took the fuel line off after the pump and pumped the bulb and
i do have fuel comin out.I am having problems trying to figure out why i can put fuel in the cyls and it will pop right off. I would think if was the float stuck why pouring alittle gas in the cyls it fires right up and runs great.I had the carbs all redone last year and had it out once about a week ago and ran great. I am going to let it set a few hours and see if it will start again. Are the carbs hard to rebuild and set after I rebuilt them?

Re: Fuel Pump

well I had the carbs rebuilt and the fuel line to the 2nd carb had a kink in it.I learned alot about boat dealer. The one i spent a fortune on last year I have had to rework most every thing they did and waited a month for it be done. I found a great dealer that fixed all my problems and did it under a week like they said.
