83 Evinrude 50 HP

Here are the symptoms . . . all this happens on the water, by the way.

bulb goes soft after running
in line fuel filter from tank to engine goes empty
dies at idle (after a while)
dies in gear (low rpm)
runs rough

It does go to 4900 RPM's and runs fairly well the rest of the time. A little rough at WOT, but not bad.

What I have done -

-rebuilt carbs
-replaced fuel hose (tank to engine)
-replaced tie wraps with metal clamps
-have added Sea Foam to last tank of gas (still have it in tank) - had 1/2 full tank I added it to, then later added more gas and oil
-cleaned gas tank and filter on pick up tube
-cleaned fuel pump filter
-re-adjusted linkage
-replaced throttle cable

I am going to rebuild the fuel pump, but am wondering if I can just pull it apart and clean it, or are there parts that I need to replace.

So, does it sound like the fuel pump and, if so, clean or rebuild?

Thanks :) ,

Jason

Re: Fuel Pump?

Have exactly the same symptoms on my newly acquired 78 Merc800. Had it to rebuild carbs. Mechanic told me that fuel hose is to small in diamtere, plus it has a car fuel tank. Did you find a solution already?

Re: Fuel Pump?

I think you need a fuel pump kit. The diaphram probably has a small hole.

Re: Fuel Pump?

Interesting. A small hole. I pulled it apart and carb cleaned it last night. Put it back together, started her and slightly less rough. Not much.
Another thing I found was that the plugs are fouling pretty badly. Oily, wet, and black - I did mix the oil a little rich last time, about 19 oz to 6 gals. vs 16 oz to 6 gals. Ran about 2 gallons out - then added gas again, with 6 oz of oil. So, total I have put in 25 oz. of oil with 8 gal. of gas. At 50:1, I should have added 21. Not a huge difference, but would that make the plugs foul? That and the Seafoam maybe?

I'll get the fuel pump rebuild kit and do that today (got a day off!!!! Woo-hoo!).

Thanks for the info.

Jason

Re: Fuel Pump?

Just tested the fuel pump. Spurted fuel out everywhere when cranking. Put on new clamps.
I think my problem is with the plugs and fuel/oil/seafoam mix. I am going to run this out today, put in new plugs and gas next weekend.

See if this works out the rough idle.

Gonna rebuild the fuel pump anyway, only $14, takes 5-10 min. and it hasn't been done in almost 20 yrs.

Doesn't explain the soft bulb and empty in-line fuel filter though. Can a fuel pump work intermittantly? Any thoughts/ideas from anyone?

Let me know if ya'll can think of anything.

Thanks,

Jason

Re: Fuel Pump?

Hi Jason! I don't know if a little 'rude is the same as a big one, but I was having problems with my 3hp Lightwin which included rough running, fouled plugs, bulb stayed about 70% hard and when I pumped it the engine acted like it was getting flooded. I replaced the plugs, had the carb off about 4 times, once to check and adjust float level and float valve action, the rest of the time to look for crud. I cleaned the points and replaced the condensers - nothing helped. I finally replaced the fuel line from FP to carb and the one running from quick-disconnect fitting to fuel pump. Took fuel pump apart, cleaned, reinstalled - helped some. Rebuilt fuel pump and ran all day at WOT, idles like a dream and that's it. That d--n fuel pump can screw up performance and look like alot of other things, but I bet you rebuild yours and no more probs. Good Luck!

Re: Fuel Pump?

Thanks for the reply, squeakit. I think you are spot on. I pulled fuel pump and cleaned it. Then the plugs. Fouled. Cleaned 'em. Took it on the water tonight and it ran pretty good until the end of the night, coming in to the ramp. Kept cutting out. Fouled plugs again, I bet. Too tired to check . . . bed . . . must sleep . . .

Gonna run regular gas/oil mix through it tomorrow and see how much better she does, if at all. Hoping so. Tonight after about 20 min. of WOT, she ran like new for about 10-20 min. then crap again.

Hoping it's just the mix of fix it stuff I've got in there that's causing the plugs to foul.

Keeping the fingers crossed. ;)

Thanks for your help.

Jason
