I am getting ready to install a Tempo fuel sender and noticed that the electrical wire that is connecting to the sender case is actually placed into a half tank of gas after the install is complete. Doesn't this pose some type of explosion risk having a hot wire in gasoline ? Did I misunderstand the directions ?

I took out the old sender unit off of a 76 Seaswirl and noticed the sender case was mounted up at the top with no external wire hanging in the gasoline. Any help would be much appreciated.
