fuel sending unit ?

I think my sending unit in my tank is bad i probably need to change it my question is are they all the same and how hard is this to do i have a 55 g tank and an access panel on my deck that leads to the top of the tank ?

I don't know if they are all the same,but they are usually prett easy to change. Take out the screws, unhook the wires, pull it out. Then do the reverse for the new one. I would unhook your battery before you do anything, just to ensure that there will be no spark. Bad place to have a spark.

Slammer, You should be able to buy a universal replacement which has an adjustable float assembly. As Vip says, open the access panel, remove the wiring, remove the screws and pull out the old unit. Now (according to the directions on the new unit) measure and cut the float assembly to size, install it and connect the wiring.

Sending units are manufactured to an industry standard so they should all fit the same. You can buy a universal sender at any decent marine supply store. You must then calibrate it to the capacity of your tank. The instructions tell you how. This is a very easy job if you can use a screwdriver (5 screws and offset screw holes so you can't install it incorrectly).<br /><br />I did this for mine about a year ago. I called the tank manufacturer (on the tank data plate) and bought the sender matched to my model tank. That way I'm comfortable that I am getting the most accurate reading possible.
