fuel seperator cannister

Is it a good idea to use a fuel seperator /cannister on the older mid 70s merc outboards?And due away with the inline filters?<br />And would you keep it between the tank and the primer bulb.

For what it's worth, I bought my motor after it had sat for 4 years....water in the tank. I put a seperator between the tank and bulb as you mentioned. It cleaned the water out of the tank after several fillups. I have had no water in the gas since (2 years)You always run the risk of water in the tank depending on the gas station you fill up at. The filter eliminates any worry.<br /><br />Jerry
