I am thinking way ahead to winter here. I have always used fuel stabilizer and I have never drained the carbs in my boat. I was just wondering what most people do.

Re: Fuel stabilizer or drain carbs for long storage periods

This subject has come up many times.
The Merc manual does actually state "Run carbs dry" but this also incorporates running "fog" through them prior to shut down.
We don't need to winterize in Australia, so I let the motor run to near stall and remove the fuel line between outings, keep the petrol fresh and start it up on muffs at 3-4 week intervals.
If you are storing it away all winter, I think you should follow the procedure in the manual and do a complete drain/fog etc..
There are lots of opinions on here and everyone tries to help.. It is a great site. But at the end of the day,My motor (20 yrs old) has been "run out" of fuel every trip since new (previous owner) and started up with fresh fuel regularly .. and is still going well. Others may have a completely different approach with same results, so maybe both are OK. But the most common advice is,fresh fuel, stabiliser, and change impeller and gear oil regularly.

My 115 has the 2+2 system where only 2 cylinders are active below 2000 RPM. I don't think I can run it dry. I would have to open the float bowls. Shouldn't be a big deal but I haven't done it before. And yes its out in the cold all winter, -35C at the worst.

Minus 35 would KILL me... So I wouldn't have to worry about OB motors..
I don't think the carbs ever run "dry" anyway. There would always be a little fuel in
the bowl which could be worse than leaving them full, as it would turn to varnish sooner.
I don't know much about the 2+2, bit you are right that they can't run dry w/o removal
and drain of the bowls. They tend to recommend a good stabiliser and you currently use it
without problems, so why not stick to it.

I use Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer year round and in the off season I don't drain my carbs either. I have never had a fuel related problem.
