Here it is:
-Carbs have been rebuilt.
-Fuel pump is working
-fuel tank is venting
-Has ignition
-Reed valves are new

The engine won't start. If I spary ether or some starting fluid directly in the carbs it fires over, but once the ether atomizes it stops. There is fuel getting into the fuel bowl of the carbs but obviously not into the crankcases.

The carbs have been taken apart and put back together by a profession mechanic.

What am I missing?

Hey andy....is that a 140hp? Little confusing partner....

But since you used carb in the plural, we'll assume a 140.

Are you sure the choke is working and the choke plates are both closing all the way? Might seem a dumb question, but did you pull the drain plug on the carbs and see gas coming out and did you pump the primer bulb to verify fuel to the carbs by the flow out the drain plug hole?

And please don't use starting fluid to get the engine going. There's no lube in the stuff. Use premix gas in a spray bottle if you have to prime the carbs.

One more question, were the carbs gummed up and was that the reason you had them rebuilt by a "pro"? Just need a little history.

Didn't mean to say "carbs". It is a 14hp.

"did you pull the drain plug on the carbs and see gas coming out and did you pump the primer bulb to verify fuel to the carbs by the flow out the drain plug hole?"

Yes.

Didn't actually have a "pro" do it. My friend is a mechanic so he watched me reassemble it. Naturally at first I thought I did something wrong reassembling.

OK...LOL....one carb. 14hp....probably a commercial somewhere's in the 80's. Post a model number and we can get the year.

Is this an electric start or rope?

Did you verify the choke is working?

Carb cleaning....did you pop the welch plugs, soak it out in carb cleaner, follow up with choke and carb cleaner in a can and then blow out with compressed air? Darn near a fool proof way to clean a carb.

I'll tell ya', it don't take much to clog a jet or idle passage

Use a carb kit?

It starts with a rope pull. The carbs were fully disassembled and soaked in the carb cleaner you can buy by the gallon. Then dried out with compressed air. And yes, a carb kit was used.

It is really quite a brain buster!
I will check on the choke.

thanks-
andy
