I have a problem on my suzuki dt 85 outboard. it runs like a bat out of hell as long as i pump the primer bulb. if i stop however, i the engine will bog down as if it's fuel starved.
get this though: I've changed out the diaphram kit in the fuel pump, cleaned the fuel filter and it has good gas.
what gives? the only thing i can think of are the little o rings between the fuel pump and engine block. i don't see any visable cracks in the fuel line and i've changed out a leaking nipple/ quick connect on the engine cover.
the o rings look good but maybe at high pressure they are leaking being that they are hardened after 30 years???? do i need to change out the fuel filter o ring also? the fuel pump seems to be pumping fine but maybe it's sucking in some air somewhere right???

any suggestions guys and gals? thanks, ken

Is your gas tank far away from motor? Are you using the small fuel filter that is installed in the motor? If tank is far away, try running it on a portable tank to see if that helps.try putting in a water/fuel seperator filter and doing away with the small one in motor. If that doesn't work re-build carbs.

no, the tank is a portable tank that is housed only 1 foot away. the gas line snakes about 6 feet. the only filter is the one inside the engine cover. I've cleaned it and inspected it. i rebuilt the carbs 3 years ago. i always run the gas out of the carbs after a day on the lake.

Time for proper carb clean ..... if it stays running when pumping the fuel bulb it is dirty carbs for sure ....

CLEAN YOUR CARBS. Just had same problem on my DT85. Had a mech. do it and now runs great. My carbs also had been done 4 years ago. And put on the water seperator.

Re: Fuel Starvation On Suzuki Dt85

thanks for your replys guys and gals.

If i can drain fuel out of the TOP carb would that mean that fuel is getting to the top carb and that the carbs don't need cleaning or a least that means the float is allowing fuel to get up there? that still leads me to believe that the fuel pump isn't pumping hard enough. i did rebuild the fuel pump and verified that it was pumping by removing the hose on the pump output and there is a flow of fuel coming out. I don't know how to test the pressure of it though..... i held my finger over the output but it doesn't seems to have a lot of pressure.... is that normal? again, maybe the o rings behind the pump need to be changed because they are worn?

I'm confused....

sometimes when rebuilding carbs we get side tracted, family, girlfriend, dog, ext. and forget that we cleaned or blown out a hole!Fuel runs from the fuel pump to the bottom carb to the top.Fuel pump seens to be working,I would strip them carbs and take your time cleaning, one at a time!Daughter is leaving for Afganistan soon(she is a weapon specialist) one of those GI janes.need her to show me how to use the printer to copy and send stuff.Have a service manual for DT75-DT85,will send you info.Coach!:

Thanks For All Your Help Guys And Gals! It Worked! I Cleaned The Carbs And It Ran Like A Bat Out Of Hell! There Was A Lot Of Gunk In The Bottom Carb. The Filter Looked Clean However. I Guess Junk Still Gets In The Little Air Vents On The Carbs. :d

Re: Fuel Starvation On Suzuki Dt85

I know this is an old thread but I rebuilt my carbs today and was wondering how much fuel flow I should have? The problem was after half throttle it would bog down like it was starving for fuel until it would die. It ran great last year and ran carb cleaner thru it last week and may have knocked something loose, so I did the rebuild. still putting it back together now but was wondering if it doesn't fix my problem should I look at the fuel pump next? Thanks for all the good info guys and gals.

Re: Fuel Starvation On Suzuki DH115

I have the same problem with my DH115, fuel injected Suzuki. I've replaced all the fuel lines on the engine, the low pressure filter, the fuel blub... good fuel, clean tank. It's been doing this occasionally for three years now! Seems to be getting worse. Any ideas???
