I have a 1978 85hp johnson that I just got ran it and when I went to full throtle the engine would go at a low rpm and then at once pick up and fly then when I would drop it back down it would do the same no middle rpm either slow or fast..Now me knowing virtuly nothing about outboards I had a 1973 50hp on boat previously and used same fuel lines..When I talked to the previous owner of the 85hp he said he never had that problem and had just taken boat out the day before I bought engine..He thinks it was a fuel starve..Does this sound right to you??? I am currently working on getting my tach working now just have to wire...Wich I think I got under control thanks for any input...

Re: Fuel Starve?????

I'm no expert but have been around boats and fishing all my life, grew up on a large lake . For what its worth I'd check the fuel lines ,primer bulb, fuel filter, etc. Are you getting good fuel flow to the carbs ? Just a couple things to check out , I've had these problems with fuel flow in the past and most of the time it was in the supply .
Good-Luck,
KYHunter

One thing I just thought of. I used to check my primer bulb when I was on lake and my engine would act funny. A time or two I would squeeze the bulb and my motor would run right, and I would change the bulb.
