Ok-- (RDE-17 johnson-- 25 horse seahorse 1955 ? )

I pulled the carb tonight and split it. Fairly simple looking. Not really dirty but old gaskets kind of hard.
It has a little blass bown with a fuel strainer element in the bowl. It is a little cylinder shaped thing.
It looks to hard to be foam. Not sure what it is made of. (could it be sintered brass?)
It looks like it has a heavy shellac stain on it. (like in all the pores-)
I shot it with a quick burst of carb cleaner and then compressed air. Helped a little--- but I didnt do it more because
I didnt want to dissolve it- not knowing what it is made of ......

Is this brass ? is it safe to soak (submerge overnight) in carb cleaner ? Are new ones available ???

How do I deal with this ?

other than a replacement all you can do is soak it in solvent like acetone or lacquer thinner and blow dry it a few times

you can always mount an external in line filter and take out the one inside the glass bowl

they are still sold about 20$ this one fits a 1958 35hp
