I have a Golden Jet 1713C and it has an external and a integral fuel tank. How do I isolate the tanks from each other so that I can treat the on engine tank as a reserve? Is there a valve on the side of the motor. There is something on the side but I'm totally ignorant as to what it does.

Most outboards with an internal tank have a fuel shutoff valve for that tank. Pop the cover off and check. That would be all you'd need to do. Shut the valve off until you need to use the reserve.

If there's no valve, you can put one inline with the hose that supplies fuel from the internal tank to the engine.

Check, though, to make sure that the external and internal tanks aren't just connected with a "Y" fitting. If that's the case, your built-in tank might just drain into the external tank, defeating your purpose.

If that is the case, you'd want to keep the valve closed, then disconnect the external tank before switching to the internal one.
