15 Hp fastwin. fuel tank leaks. I know about the rebuild kit. Will get one. What is the metal primer pump for and should it move up and down? I doesnt move hardly at all.
Do you turn it and pump like a coleman lantern?

Why is the kit $25. Isnt it just a gasket kit?

The primer pump is just that. It pumps gas to the carburetor so you can start the motor. Once the motor starts, valves in the reed plate allow air to be pumped into the tank. Air pressure in the tank forces more gas up into the carburetor as needed. Contrary to popular belief, the primer pump does not presurize the tank. It only fills the carb for initial startup.
The tank must be air tight to hold pressure. That means the top gasket, fill cap gasket, relief valve, seals on the screws, pump diaphragm, all have to be good. In addition, there are two metal diaphragm supports on the metal button type push rod. The supports and end of the push rod have to be in good condition or it will leak gas around the push rod. The button is supposed to be loose and spin on the rod so you won't have a tendency to rotate it and unscrew the rod when mashing down to prime it. There is a check valve in the bottom of the pickup tube (doesn't come apart...just blow/suck on the tube to make sure it works one way only.) There is also a loose check valve disc under the pump cover that you don't want to lose. Yes, the button is supposed to move up and down to flex the pump diaphragm. It doesn't move very far. And no, it ain't a Coleman. I don't know how much they give you in the kit....probably not enough.

You've got it. FR, did a great job of explaining the concept/reality.
