I recently purchased a 1975 Glastron V 178 with a 1975 mercury 1150 on it...i have been from one end to the other doing clean up and maintenance...the boat has 20 gallon inboard fuel tank...i removed the tank and emptied the old fuel...the tank looks great inside...my question is this: with winter coming on, im not sure i want to put fuel in the tank just to have it set all winter, im just taking the boat out for the first time and i could run it off of one of my remote mercury cans (6 gal) But, is it worse to leave the tank empty than to have fuel in it, i know i could use sta-bil to keep the fuel good...GOOD or BAD to leave the tank dry...??

Re: fuel tank question

Most engine OEs are recomending these days to leave the tank empty or as close to empty as possible for storage. Obviously if you do put fuel in it you'll want to add some sort of stabilizer of your choice and run it down as far as possible. If it were mine I'd run it with your portable tanks and start with fresh fuel after the storage period.

And you'll want to run stabilized fuel thru the motor regardless of which tank you use.

Thanks for the input Dhadley...thats good news to me...even though i can use a stabilizer, i hate to leave fuel sitting for 5 to 6 months...im taking this boat out for the first time after doing a powerhead swap...i was hoping i could just use my portable tank with enough fuel to see how the engine is doing...Thanks!

Monk, Throw some 2 cycle oil in the tank and swish it around. It will keep the rust down.

Re: fuel tank question

I would do as per Chris1956's recomendation but I would do it with a gas/oil mix say one quart gas with one pint oil or so to make the job easier.
