Fuel tank question

I just picked up a small fishing boat with an 85' Evinrude 15hp, this is my 1st outboard. My question is, when I disconnect the fuel line from the 6 gal tank, it will continuously leak from where it connects at the tank unless i crack the cap to vent it. Is this normal? Seems like there would be a "check valve" or something? Tank is less than half full.

Re: Fuel tank question

sounds like you may have a bad O-ring inside the connection. I leave the vent open on my tanks all the time and leave the fuel line attached, I only disconnect from the motor end.

Re: Fuel tank question

UMMMM.......Your tank has to be vented for the motor to run. It should have a little vent screw in one of the caps on the tank. Leave it open all the time..Sun, Heat will swell your tank if it isn't vented.
The only time I close it, Is to pull the tank out to refill it.
If you get in the habit of leaving it open while it is in the boat. You will never run into the motor dying on the water because of it.(don't ask how I know this)

Re: Fuel tank question

The tank should not leak at all from the connection coupling whether the vent is open or not.
When the fuel hose is connected it depresses the schreader valve needle in the tank fitting allowing fuel to flow, when hose is removed the needle pops back out sealing the opening similar to a tire valve stem.
