Hope this is the correct forum for this. Has anyone repaired a plastic fuel tank threaded inlet before? I must have cross threaded the connector when I put it in and gas leaks by the threads. I used some thread tape but that did not work. Any suggestions?

Re: Fuel Tank Repair

One trick I've used in similar cases is the heat the metal fitting just hot enough that it begins to melt the plastic. Install the fitting and the threads will form to the tank. Let it cool, then remove the fitting again. Add some pipe dope that is fuel tolerant and this time make sure you don't cross-thread the fitting when re-installing it. I used this technique on the live well drain fitting at the stern of my boat. I installed a threaded brass plug and converted the drain to a pump-out style.

Re: Fuel Tank Repair

Another trick that might work would be to install a nut on the fuel pickup inside the tank. Put a rubber and SS washer under the nut to seal the inside. You may need to get creative with some brass pipe nipples/reducers to make it work, if the fuel pickup is not long enough.
