Having to pull out my tank on my 83 Chris Craft Catalina to put my swim platform on, I may as well put a new fuel sender in as I now stick the tank to check fuel level. Although sticking the tank is 100% fool-proof, I'd still like the gauge to work. Where can I look to get the correct sending unit for my tank. Thanks. Also if anyone has had to remove the tank on a Chris Craft Catalina, are there any hints on removing it.

Yes I did test it, When hooked up it pegs the gauge full, and when unhooked the gauge is at full empty

If the pink wire connection on the sender was tightened to the point where the threaded stud turned, that may have created a connection between the now turned stud and the ground (metal shell) of the sender. Before you buy a new sender, remove the old one and look carefully at the flat wire that connects the stud to the resistance element of the sender. That flat wire may be touching the metal of the sender. Rotate the stud to fix this and chances are the sender will work as it should. If the sender is bad, then measure the depth of the tank. Senders are sold for various depth tanks, or they are adjustable by cutting off the metal piece that the resistance element is attached to. You need a sender with 30-240 ohm resistance.

Well the last owner of the boat had said it was like that for him when he got it and he had it another 12 years, so while the tank is out I'm just gonna replace the sending unit.

West Marine has a variety most older boats use the same resistance? Pull yours and order one that shows the closest specs in every deminsion possible. One of my boats holds 40 gallons but the tanks only 6?s deep getting the empty adjustment right requires some effort. The deeper the tank the more wiggle room you have to get it right.
