I have an older steel fuel tank and the pick up tube fitting is welded to the tank.the pick up tube is missing inside tank. Can I use where the pick up tube was for a vent and use a 5/8 piece of hose with a black pipe coupling clamped in it and and a nipple threaded into coupling and the hose clamped to the vent port on tank? Will this get me by until winter and then I can find a tank.

Re: fuel tank

The vent on tank has a 5/8 riser where a 5/8 rubber hose connects.Since the dip tube broken off inside the tank I was wondering if i could swap the places where the gas is drawn out and vented.I would like to know if I found a steel pipe coupling that fit inside the 5/8 rubber hose and made the rubber hose just long enough to clamp on the tank and coupling so it will stay vertical on tank. then use a steel reducing bushing on the end that goes into tank and use a smaller pipe to go into tank so it will have a dip tube down to bottom of tank.then use a street elbow with a reducing bushing down to my rubber gas line size. This is all done where the vent is on tank.Where the dip tube use to be there is no problem enlarging to 5/8. I was wondering if a 3/8 hole is a large enough hole for a vent and it will only be 3/8 for only about an 1 inch then it will be the 5/8 the rest of the way.
