Im currently rebuilding a '70s Starcraft 14ft that I bought dirt cheap because it was pretty thrashed and the motor didnt run. The motor that was on it was a '77 Johnson 35hp and the PO had a single 6 gallon tank stowed away. That motor however had zero compression so its an anchor at this point. I purchased a nice running '90 Evinrude 30hp to eventually put on the boat but im curious about everyones thoughts about the fuel usage of the motor and if 6 gallons will be enough for a day on the water fishing? I have thought about upsizing the tank but that adds another 40+ pounds and Im not sure it would fit under the splashwell. Ive never run this size motor so Im uncertain. I know on my 12ft I had a 15hp SeaKing and 6 was plenty, as it was also on my 16ft with a 15hp. But this boat is a little heavier and the twice the motor

Thanks in advance

outboard motors burn 0.5# of fuel per hp per hour. so depending on how much HP you are commanding, your fuel burn will vary accordingly. so if you idle along it will use far less fuel than if your WOT into an on-coming wind.

however a 6 gallon tank is normally what I would expect to see on a boat with a 35.

small one or two gallon plastic jerry can stored up in the bow, premixed. Run it through the motor every month or two, and refill.

fishing... hum big question fishing as in .... trolling or chasing the rainbow for the big one

my ETEC 75 burns .6L per hour trolling but that is modern fuel injected...

I suspect a carb 30 (if it is carbed) should burn equal or less hopefully not more

trolling would give you about 20L for a 6 US gal. or 20 x.6 l 12 hours

but stay with in range of the dock :)......or get a nice old Evinrude 5.5 or 9.5 oldy with shifthing

I would keep it simple. That Starcraft is a light boat, and probably gets you a pretty good range. Leave with a full tank and test out the motor at cruising speed (want to see how it runs anyway). When the tank is about half empty, head on back. That gives you an idea of your range. Trolling extends it.

And you get a nice boat ride out of it too....
