I have a 2007 Mercury 9.9 (4 stroke) tiller and would like to install a water separator in my boat. Are they universal as far as what type/size for a wide range of outboard sizes? Or are they based on the size of outboard? Or is the outboard size irrelevant? I'm kinda confused on this.

The outboard size is irrelevant in your case. Most any one will work fine on your engine. I use the spin-on oil filter looking type and it works fine. Some like the Racor separating filters, cause you can see what's in the filter and they have a small drain tap on the bottom to drain any accumulated water. But if you change the filter on the type I use every year, you will have no problem. With this type, you need to get 2 barbed fittings of the proper size to install on the unit for the fuel lines..

Thank you for the info. The spin-on type is what I had in mind too.
