I have a very common model of fuel filter/water separator on my boat. Unfortunately, it is not one of the clear bowl types. In this case, how do I know when/if there is any water in there??? As it is, I just change it once per month since the filter is not very expensive.

That's about the size of it. I change my filter once per season and so far no problems. I would imagine the onset of higher percentage ethanol fuels will require a more frequent change interval.

Otherwise, you could remove the filter and taste the liquid inside. However, I personally would just switch them out and forgo the bad taste.

Thanks for the tasting suggestion, but I agree. I'll pass. I'll stick to my practice of changing the filter.
