I have a 4.3 VP Gl sx drive in a 01 fourwinns. I have winterized and want to change the fuel separtor/filter. Is it under pressure? Or can I just unscrew it and replace it with the new one?
If under pressure then what? Disconnect the battery? Thanks

Have an empty coffee can handy to drop it in .Just screw it off and screw the new one on.It will be the simplest thing you ever have to do on a boat.PS---you dont want to use a bic lighter for light when you do this.Charlie

Re: Fuel water seperator change

BTW, is that a carb engine or fuel injection?? That is an important distinction because fuel injected engines hold pressure in the fuel system for some time, you better find out for sure first!
If it is a carb engine with a mechanical fuel pump, you can go ahead and change it like an oil filter (I use a C-clamp on the fuel line just in case the anti siphon valve leaks). DO NOT make sparks in the engine compartment when, and after you do this!!

The Volvo spin on filter is on the input side of the fuel pump and is not under any pressure in either style of motor, carb or EFI. Use rags to catch the small amount of fuel that will run out when you remove it.

I have a 350 Merc. How tight do you make these as I have never changed mine. Is it just like an oil filter - 3/4 of a turn? How often should this be done?

Just like an oil filter, 3/4 of a turn (or hand tight) and put a little oil on the seal first. Change it every hundred hours or so.

What I've found to work very well is to crack the filter Loose, Then slip a Zip-lock Freezer bag around it, then finnish removing it, Drop into the baggie,+ Zip it up.......
Slick, Smooth, Clean, No Mess.......

I'm new to this kind of engine and have only changed the filter once. What I did discover is that it helps to fill the new filter with clean, fresh gas before putting it on. It keeps you from having to crank the engine too much to get gas flowing again. There may be a better way but I'm not aware of it. Granpa
