Hi everyone.
I am in the ''information gathering stage'' of the boat restoration project.
I am thinking of stripping all factory paint down to bare and repainting/ ex and interior and have a few questions.
1. i have read up on alot of threads about a good paint stripper and it came up with a industrial stripper, what do you guys/girls think.
2. Once stripped what procedure should i take next?.(buff/primer/paint)
3. and was thinking of using a matt black for a underlay and a metalic black or dark blue for top coat( exterior). and any color underlay and light blue for top coat(interior) what do you think?.
Once done i will be welding bars across attached to the supporting bars in the boat and placing marine ply- marine carpet.
And i wont forget the side panels for the fishing holders and storage up front.
its a 3 seater so i will be taking out the front one and middle and moving the middle one up(cutting down to length)
Little panel just in front of the drivers side for a sounder.
It is a massive project and after completion..well if it doesnt break haha i will show completed picture and before pic

does this sound like a good idea?
Qiuntrex 16ft- merc 15hp no idea about the model and age tho.

thanks

max

Re: Full Boat restoration Project

You'll get lots more traffic & helpful advice if you'll post some pix of your project and it's info: Maker, model, year (if models changed over the years), length/beam (may help ID model or year), aluminum/fiberglass/steel, open flat bottom jon boat/30ft cabin cruiser/etc....

If you've found an industrial stripper & want advice about using it on your boat, you'll for sure need to post pix and details about what stripper.

If you plan to apply a custom paint job, particularly anything metallic or metal flake, there are disadvantages that need to be addressed, and overcome, else you may not be satisfied w/ the long term results.

Any dark surface on a boat typically gets hot & may not be bare feet, arms and hand friendly. Posting you location may help w/ that. Boats in central Canada aren't exposed to nearly as much high temperature sun as boats in Texas. Paint & surface temps will vary drastically.....

Depending on the make & model of your boat, your avatar looks to be a flat bottom skiff/jon boat type boat, you may or may not be able to 'easily' & safely remove the seats & move them around to suit your needs & wants. Many of the boats I suspect yours to be use the seats (benches actually if I'm correct) as the primary flotation foam site and the bench is part of the structural integrity of the boat.

Give us some details & some pix & there will be plenty of people willing to help.

Welcome to iboats

Sounds as if you're wanting to put too much time and trouble for what you'll have after the project is completed. It's still an old 1950's style fishing boat that's good for small lakes, etc. with a 20-25 hp max. motor.

I would suggest you sand the hull somewhat (inside and outside) to get any gouges and rough places out of the current paint. Then, spray it with a self etching primer and do a light sanding. Finish by spraying a couple of coats of plain old Rustoleum enamel with a hardener added (available @ Tractor Supply.)

There are a hundred such boats on our lake--many of which are 1956-58 Alumacrafts. Our family's had two. I never see them painted dark blue--most often a lighter color or without paint.

Your money could be better spent on a first class outboard and a good trolling motor--neither of which are cheap.

Re: Full Boat restoration Project

ah ok. good information.
yea i found the marine paints on this site and they look alot better then what i was thinking haha.
i am in no rush on getting this back into the water.
so each week i might just chuck my spare $$ aside and order in the stuff i need.
A lighter color is what i will be doing now. either white or silver as factory built( touch up on the aluminium)
and keep a light blue inside.
