I live in a clod wearther area. Is it best to leave the fuek tank (17 gal) close to empty or full for the winter?

Eric, i try to keep my tanks full, at all times, just keep fuel stabilizer in it. air has water in it, heating and cooling causes, condensation (water) to form on the inside of the tank. it's my thought that the more air you keep out, the less condensation you will have. also keeping it full, it's ready to go when you are.

one of the fun arguments in boating that will never be solved. you'll hear both sides, pick one and you'll be fine.

fill er up, stabalize, and you're good...

leave her empty, put lots of fresh fuel in next year, and you're good.

in either case, i'd spend the effort installing a fuel/water filter.

I live in NJ and try to empty my 14 gallon plastic tank before storage. It's only a few years old, but I have yet to find any water in it. There is also a Racor fuel/water separating filter with sight bowl that also has not collected any water.

Like mattttt25 said, there are lots of opinions on this subject.

Bottom line is to go with what works for you.

For what it's worth, Mercury recommends running the tank empty(when possible) if ethenol has been used and filling it if not. Guess the ethenol attracts moisture and better to drain it for the winter...

What should be done when storing boats with ethanol-blended fuels for extended periods?

When preparing to store a boat for extended periods of two months or more, it is best to completely remove all fuel from the tank. If it is difficult or not possible to remove the fuel, maintaining a full tank of fuel with a fuel stabilizer added to provide fuel stability and corrosion protection is recommended. A partially full tank is not recommended because the void space above the fuel allows air movement that can bring in water through condensation as the temperature cycles up and down. This condensation potentially becomes a problem. Mercury Marine Fuel System Treatment & Stabilizer can help maintain fuel systems in storage. It contains oxidation inhibitors to reduce oxidation and gum formation, metal chelating agents to protect metal components from corrosion, water absorbing agents to reduce the presence of free water, and dispersants to help suspend and disperse debris. It is best used by adding to the tank at the recommended dosage, running the engine for 10 minutes to allow the system to be cleaned, shutting off the fuel valve to interrupt the fuel supply and allow the engine to run until it stops, topping off the tank until it’s full, and capping any openings to reduce the amount of exchange with the air that might bring in condensation.

Yep, fill and Stabil, unless your gas contain Ethanol, which store empty as Possible. I ALSO tape off the vents! Zero water problem, and it tends to rain here in the winter in the beautiful Pacific Northwest!
