Doesn't the fuel pump automatic shutoff stop it when it gets close?

Full fuel tank

Does anyone know of a device or any other way of knowing when your fuel tank is nearly full without having gasoline shoot out the fuel fill? The gauge in the boat isn't much help. I like to fill up at a gas station before I launch to save time and money. Sometimes I can hear it getting close but if there is a lot of traffic noise, I usually stop far short of full to avoid spilling gasoline. I know other trailer boaters with the same problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My fuel filler is nice in that if you go too fast, just as the pump shuts off it blasts fuel out the vent right there in the filler hole. Makes for a nice gasoline dousing. When it gets full the same thing. I just kick the key over to see when it gets near full and slow it down until it does cut off.

There is a device that connects to the fuel vent that will whistle as the air is being pushed out,so when the tank is full and the gas reaches the vent tube the whistle stops and you stop pumping. When I find it again,I will re-post

Re: Full fuel tank

After getting sprayed with gasoline about 3 times I don't take the chance of it not stopping and getting doused again. The pump never automatically shuts off. Other boating friends of mine have the same problem. I don't know if its the type of deck fill, location, or what causes it. The dowel rod is a good idea but the fuel hose to the tank has some fairly sharp bends in it. I can turn the key on and look at the guage but it doesn't seem to be very accurate. What actually causes the pump to stop automatically? Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi, Guys.

Fuel pumps are shut off by back pressure when the neck starts to fill. . . on CARS.

Car fuel tanks are not freely vented like boat tanks, the displaced air has to exit at the filler, through that small vent hole, where it triggers shutoff.

If you replace/rework your filler to work like a car filler, with the little hinged door and the small vent hole, then shut your regular vent while fueling, it will work like a car.

I never tried just shutting the vent, but that might work, too. It would force the air to exit up the filler tube.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I guess you learn something new everyday. At least I have a few things to try and I really appreciate the responses I've gotten. It's good to know that in the boating world, most people look out for each other. Too bad the rest of life isn't the same!

Teleflex makes an adjustable fuel sending unit that you can use to repair your existing fuel gage. That is if the sending unit in your tank is the problem. I recently did this with my boat and it worked great. (I bought one at West Marine.)

What you have to do is measure the height of your fuel tank, then adjust the float. The float has clamps that slide along an adjustment rod, then you trim off the excess rod. What I did was hold the sending unit along side the tank (with it wired in) and swing it up and down to simulate the fuel level - to make sure it was reading correctly.

Hope this helps.

Best regards, Gold Bear ;)
