Last week end after trolling for more than an hour with my old 8 HP Chrylser it stalled and was not able to make it start again until few hours later. When I got it running again I saw some white greasy stuff coming out of the exhaust like white grease and it was not running smooth until I ran it WOT for 5 minutes. Back home I removed the lower unit and found the entire inside of the leg and the exhaust port of the LU coverred with a thick milky product, I also removed the plugs and they were OK normal combustion. The stalling was most propably a result of the exhaust clugged with this milky buildup.

Any ideas or suggestions ?

Thanks

Smoky.

Did you check the lower unit oil itself? Maybe an acute failure of a shaft seal?

Hi Roscoe,

Yes I did ceck the gear box and it is OK - full of oil and no water in. And like I said it is all coverred with this sludge up to almost the top of the leg where sits the engine block. And it doesn't smell gear oil, but combustion.

Smoky

Hello.
When you troll you usually run at a real low rpm.As a result you will have far less pressure behind your exhaust gas On top of that, you don't have the ventury vacuum effect on your exhaust, you would have at higher speeds.
As a result the exhaust gas will stay a bit longer in the exhaust and the unburnt oil will mix with water and some of it will stick to the inside of your exhaust. This will happen especially when you fuel/oil mix is a bit rich.
The poor starting was probably because of unburnt oil crudding up your plug.
hope this helps.

This is a new one on me-never heard of it before. I think Rolmop probably has the best explanation. Check your oil mixture carefully next time and let us know if it does it again. Some greasy crud is typical, but not this much.
