Got the ole engine running, with a lot of help from iboats. I want to check the timing to make sure it's o.k. and then on to my prop rpm and I should be done (if there is such a thing in boating) Clymer manaul says refer to engine label If there is any info on the motor I sure can't find it. model; E7OEICTF ser: J02622459
1983? 70HP EVENRUDE
Also, I read Joe Reeves post about setting the timing at cranking speed (minus 4 degrees) Does this work on any engine? Would it matter if the battery were a little weak thus reducing the cranking speed? ...just trying to learn.
Thanks :)

Yes, that will work as a starting point. It still must be checked under a load.

I believe the full advance timing is 19 degrees on that model. Better check with someone. I'd check with our local E/J guys but their place blew away.

......a starting point. So I still need to take it to the shop to be accurate. Don't know that it's off but not being the origional owner, you never can tell. Seems to run fine... maybe a little hesitation from a idle in gear to full throttle but that may be normal for an old engine? Compression is aprox. 122 on each cylinder using a cheap gauge. Plugs are usually a bit wet but I do idle a good bit especially getting back to the dock in a long 'no wake 'zone.
maybe I should not worry about timing since money is a consideration.
Thanks Dhadley. Hope there is something left of Port Charlotte !!

You can check it yourself. Just leave the boat on the trailer and back down the ramp far enough for the water pump to get water. Fire it up and put it in gear. You mamy have to move the trailer in or out but at some point you will be able to get at or near 5000 in gear. Then you can check the timing at that point. Its very easy with the help of a buddy.
