135hp johnston 1975
Back again sorry .When i ran this motor at wot
it seems to have alot of fumes sometimes in boat.
checked tank seems fine. Read alot of pages in forums and done some checks. Hose at bot of carb looks fine but was not all the way home, motor has alot of oil on it mainly to botom section.Cowl did have lots of oil in it, have not done decarb yet as i want to see what revs are first, as we have now got tacho working. Will decarb after next run and see what diff is.Also noticed that air intake seems very oily.
does this mean reeds.
Notice these fumes after a run a good hour at 3/4 wot

Re: fumes in boat

I don't have the answer to your problem but wanted to insert a note that there is a difference between oil fumes, raw gasoline fumes, and exhaust fumes. You might want to let us know which.

Re: fumes in boat

The oil around the carb intake and pan is unburned oil from the fuel and is quite normal especially with the recycle hose not properly seated.

Two cycle motors and especially the older ones tend to be smelly. Lots of guys love the smell.

I don't think the reeds come into play with the fumes at all. Same with the decarb but that is good to do once in a while anyway.

Re: fumes in boat

Thank you Joe Reeves & So Little
for you assitance.I have only had this motor for 4 weeks still ironing out the bugs.
Joe sorry with the fumes, boy what a dill
trip up stream in morning no fumes.Return trip fumes..
My son had sore eyes when we stoped, washed his eyes and he was fine, did not think of this untill now. Wind was behind us when this happened on our return, exhaust fumes...
Never had this happen with my merc 80.
Hope the recycle hose played some part in this as well.
So Little
With all the fumes and seeing alot of oil i looked thur posts ,thinking that fuel was blowing
back out carbs which said could be reeds or rings
but motor runs fine. Just abit jumpy at present as last owner was very slack on maintance.
Will run it again this weekend and see what happens. Let you know how we go.
Thanks again

Re: fumes in boat

You think your fumes are bad, try running downwind w/ a british seagull motor running 24:1 gas mix & moving about 4 mph. The blue cloud just hangs over you.
If this is happening at speed, maybe the shape of the boat causes the exhaust to loop back into the boat.
If it's at low speed maybe a tune up would help. If your boat speed is less than a following breeze, their isn't much you can do to escape the exhaust from being blown back on you.

HI too all
Ran boat today 5000 rpm 40-44 mph no fumes
at all it was great.Son loved it .
Ed that is really bad fumes, think you are right
about boat shape. We are now traveling faster due to bigger motor 50 hp bigger, had to keep my foot on front carpet to keep it in boat. I am going to fit shade cover as the heat here kills you. Do you think this might help with air flow
