So there I am sitting at the wheel of my project boat (which is getting wet this weekend btw :D ) fiddiling with a corroded transducer/power connection that seems to be making the unit cut out.

Now, as I'm poking a wire rasp into and across the female posts to clean off visable corrosion that may have been causing the problem - a small blue spark flashes from my fingers.

Yup, I forgot to disconnect it from the battery.

Well, that little blue spark caused a micro- sized flaming blue fleck of metal to land on the tip of my nose just ahead of and between my nostrils causing me to jerk my head back and slam my instantaniously flooded eyes while at the same time spurring an immediate reaction of my right hand (that was holding the wire rasp) towards my face to administer a soothing rub.

But, before my hand had a chance to administer the soothing rub the rasp that was in my hand plunged into my left nostril halting my hand dead in its tracks and caused a steady stream of warm metalic tasting stuff to flow over my top lip.

one cuss word ... only one burst out of my mouth unconsciously but, that one explative spattered warm matalic red stuff all over my shirt, shorts, legs and boots.

All this due to some IDIOT not pulling a fuse which in turn caused a little teeny weeny blue spark.

Wow.

If someone had been near enough to hop onto your back right about then, that might have been a wilder ride than anything at 6 Flags or Disneyland.

When I was in the Navy, I worked on a radar deception repeater(Jammer) that had capacitors the size of small coffee cans. There were two basic rules about working with the equipment.

1. never ever go in alone
2. always disconnect the power and short the capacitors with a shorting probe.

The guy that worked on the starboard side system was in a hurry one day, he ignored rule 1 and got only half of rule 2 right.

From what he could remember afterward, he forgot to short the capacitors and had to reach in the system to connect a piece of test equipment. One of the caps must have discharged and got him.

It threw him 5 feet or so, up against the bulkhead hard enough to leave a slight impression in the metal and scare the h@ll out of the ensign on the other side. Fortunately he wasn't really hurt, other than the headache from hitting the bulkhead and the 6 months of harassment he got. :)

While with 1st Marine Air Wing on Okinawa back in '76, my shop was near enough to the Avionics Twidgit guys that I could look in their door from my desk.

They had a young, been in the Marine Corps since last Wednesday, 18 year old kid that was always getting into mischief. One day someone showed him the 'leave a charged capacitor on the work bench, see who picks it up and gets buzzed' trick.

After he picked it up, got the snot knocked out of him, he figured out how it worked. Then, he got a bigger one to use on the 'next guy'.

But instead of charging it up on a battery,,,, he just bent the leads, went over, and while holding it with insulated pliers,,,,, stuck it into a wall outlet.

Naturally, it blew up.

I looked in when I heard the 'bang'.

That kid looked like Uncle Fester from the Adam's family after one of his experiments.

His uniform was smoldering, he had black soot and burning bits of 'goo' all over himself... And this real 'shocked' expression that would make a dog laugh.

Oh yes, the old charged cap trick. We used to do that to the radar operators for kicks. :)

We always used to leave a BIG cap on the power supply, backwards. Just turn it up to .5 - 1 volt, and walk away. A few minutes later BANG! Teachers Tech hated us...
