Funky Oil

Tonight the wife and I sucked the oil from the Mercruiser 3.0. I've yet to purchase a proper pump, so I rigged up some fish tank tubing and a plastic pipe fitting, and hooked the sucking end to a vacuum cleaner. It was beautiful... I mean functional.

After sucking out almost a gallon, we switched jugs to a new empty gallon jug and all of a sudden, the oil turned foamy and brown.

So, 2 questions:

1) It's a 3.0 litre, so why did so much oil come out. When I check the dipstick, it says it's perfectly full. When is the dipstick correct? When it's on the water, or when it's on the trailer on level ground?

2) Why did it turn frothy brown? The color reminded me of a Frosty from Wendy's. I assume this means some water was in the oil.... ACK!

Thanks as always,
Neil

Re: Funky Oil

You absolutely have water in the oil. A 3.0 holds 4.5 quarts with the large filter. The frothy brown that you described is what we call milkshake. Precisely what happens when you churn oil and water together.

Re: Funky Oil

Get as much as the white/ brown stuff out as you can , Put in some fresh oil and run it and see if the condensation will burn off . If not , you could have a cracked block . The oil will always rise to the top after sitting awhile and the water will settle
