Funny question, throttle reversed

Ok, I'm buying an older boat, pretty cheap. Apparently at one point it had twin outboards. Throttle is a double style and it still has two cables terminating back near the motor.

Some where along the way a single 115HP was installed, and apparently there were issues and they could only hook it up to the right throttle which controlled the counter rotating engine.

So now I've got a boat the I need to pull the throttle back to go into forward, and push to go into reverse. Probably won't be a big deal for now, but I'd like to get it right.

So my stupid question is this... is there any way to simply rotate the entire throttle box reversing the directions or will I twist and kink the cables?

Just curious...

I would find a single control that is the correct match for your setup. A dealer might have a used one that he'd be willing to trade for your dual control if it's in good shape. I personally dislike any type of setup that looks jerryrigged.

I may be wrong but you could drop the LU and adjust the linkage there. but I don't know what kind of motor you have.. Maybe some one else here could help

Re: Funny question, throttle reversed

its a 115 HP Mariner from 1994. I'm not sure if its worth too much work, I just thought that it might work if I simply "turned" the Dual throttle around. Its currently hooked up the the throttle on the right, and if I rotated the throttle box 180 degrees the working throttle would be on the left and would be push for forward and pull for reverse. I just don't know if the rotation will cause any problems in the cables.

The correct way to do it would be to hook the motor up to the left throttle controls, but the cables were too short, from the original twin setup.

Thanks

Re: Funny question, throttle reversed

When I bought my boat (used) The throttle/gears were set up on the right side of the console and operated the way you describe....back for forward and forward for reverse. I was able to turn the whole assembly around and set it up on the left side of the console. Now it works correctly. Not sure if this will work for you or not.

good... I'll have to get under the console and see what's possible...

Glad to hear I'm not the only person that looks for an "easy" answer....

Re: Funny question, throttle reversed

Bmorris1, On my '77 Merc 1500, if the gearshift rod is in the wrong position when the lowerunit is installed, the gears are reversed. The cure was to drop the LU, set both the motor and LU to The "correct" neutral, and reassemble.
