My fish finder/depth finder is having trouble reading depths at speed. once on plane, it will continue to give a speed reading, but the depth reading will either dissapear or jump up to an extremely high number (198ft.) when I know that I am only in 14 -20 ft. Also, if i do have to cross shallow areas, it will cut out at about 4 ft. I have tried a few things, but nothing is helping. Any suggestions?

I would suggest that you check the position and orientation of your depth sounders transducer. Your depth sounder manual should give instructions about acceptable configurations. Generally the transducer should be in "clean" water (not down stream of hull projections), about 6-10" from the outdrive, about 1/4" below the bottom edge of the boat, and have a small positive angle with the hull bottom. Use a straight edge along the boat bottom to assure the transducer face is tilted correctly ~ 5 degrees.

I have the exact same problem with my uniden dept sounder. On mine I can adjust the sensitivity and that should take care of it says the manual. But, no... As soon as I am up in speed I get those high numbers.
How should that 5 degree angle be? Should the transducer point send the signals slightly forwards underneath the boat?

Regards
Michael
