My 1984 Evenrude 70 ran good last year.Stored it outside with a cover on it. I noticed some dirtdobber nests inside the engine cover. Probably has nothing to do with my problem. Im not getting a spark on any of the plugs. I have a manual and have checked the fuse and the switch circuit, kill switch etc. I cant imagine all three coils being bad. Is there an easy way to check the power pack? Clymer manual says I need a special meter. Im also confused about checking the charge coils. Thanks for this website.

Sounds like the Seloc is more your type of manual.

Boatin, you are gonna have to start checking device resistance(stator, pickups, coils) as described in the manual. Then you will have a better idea of what it isn't.

Just out of curiosity, did you remove the blk/yel wire and try it?

I removed the blk.yel. wire at the ign. switch and checked circuit to make sure it wasnt grounded. Ill try resistance again on the charge coil. Maybe Im just having a bad day. Im even getting confused when checking each coil. Pulling the lead off plug #1 Im getting the same reading, no matter if I put the other meter lead on pin #A #B or #C.

Re: fustrated no spark cant understand manual

This is what is soooo fustrating!! Im beginning to doubt my abilty to make a simple resistance measurement. I have disconnected the plug wires to all three plugs. I put the black test lead on the # one ignition coil high tension terminal then I put the red test lead on terminal A of the ignition coil end of the disconnected terminal. I get a reading of 265 ohms. So far, so good. But I get the same reading if I move the red test lead to terminal B or even C. Keep in mind that I1m checking coil # one. Its as if all the terminals are shorted together!! Ever heard of terminals in a connector shorting together or have I gone nuts???

If you have a voltmeter... you can check for voltage from the stator. Red to stator lead...black to ground. You should see around 3 volts. If you get a garbled voltage..ie..a whole wack of flashing numbers the Stator is not working properly.

IMO I would change the powerpack.

TMD

Re: fustrated no spark cant understand manual

Seloc is a different type of manual mostly working with tools from an ordinary toolbox, not specialized tools. It sort of talks you through the repairs you are making on your outboard.
Make sure the plug is in, is like a signature under my answers and has nothing to do with the subject matter.
I apologize if there was a misunderstanding.
Cornelis.

Cornelis,
Sounds like Seloc IS my type of manual. Purchased a puller for $11 and decided to pull the flywheel and have a look. If the coils looks bad I might take it to the shop and have them test it. They are nice guys/ probably wouldnt even charge me.Thanks. Every bit of info helps.

The OMC flywheel puller costs over $50. Hope the one you bought for $11 works and doesn't damage your engine....
