I had overheated coils detailed in this thread:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=404398

Upshot is I walked into my local Canadian Tire Store to talk to the very knowledgable guys at the auto parts counter and one of them has had overheat issues on his coil under the hood of a highly modified mustang.

The heat under the hood from his monster mill was cooking coils. He was looking at cutting extra vents into the fenders to increase airflow when he stumbled upon a coil that was designed to handle high heat.

This beastie has a ceramic coated shell with a silicone liner and it solved the problem.

Sounds to me like this is the perfect bulletproof coil for marine applications.

For you Canadians out there in the IBOATS land the Can Tire stock number is 41-333

Its an Accel Super Stock Universal Performance coil

# 8140 bright yellow coating-- there is another just like it with a chrome finish that my parts guy was silent on - I suspect because the ceramic finish is more heat resistant than the chrome and the chrome has a different part #

(I know auto is usually inferior to marine due to spark = explosion issues)

Stock coil $29.95 CDN Bulletproof Coil $49.95 CDN

Sounds like your overheated coil was due to it not being wired correctly and not having the proper ballast resistor.

Naw it was due to my boneheaded short circuit condition whereby the main pos connector to the starter was touching the post on the solenoid next to it and energizing the ignition circuit bypassing the resitance wire to the coil.
I posted this because in my research I found that a bad coil will most likely fail when its hot ergo if you spend the extra $20 on a coil that is built to resist heat its my assumption that you get a coil that is significantly better than stock. Might make the diff between getting back to shore or not.

Even the more expensive coil is going to fry if that happens. As long as you aren't a bonehead, shouldn't be a problem though. :)

As far as heat resistance is concerned, the heat you were generating was internal to the coil not external like an automotive environment. You want a coil that can get the heat out...not keep it out. If the ceramic coating is acting like an insulator, that will make problems worse if you are running too much current through a coil.
