1992 evinrude 40 - Put timeing gun on plugs, top plug not fireing. Engine is running on one cylinder. I have a clymer manual but I am haveing a problem finding info on how to troubleshoot external coil. I was told that you couldnt troubleshoot the power pack. Same guy said the power pack for this model was located under the flywheel. Some work has been done on this moter. It looks like a power pack is mounted kinda underneath the external coil. Its a rectangualr box(black) w/ a ground and wires going to the stator, what else could it be? And if it isnt the external coil or the power pack what other possibilities are there. (Plug wires and plugs are good) Also what is the litte plug in the back of the motor w/ one wire comeing out, thermostat? Where is the rectifier?

Switch your coils around, If top cyl. is still not fireing then you can suspect bad power pack.

Good luck!

If when you switch coils around the bottom plug is not fireing, then its the coil thats bad.

Good luck!

Just switch plug wires from one plug to the next or switch around the wires to the coils.

Switch coils around. Take the top one off and put it on the bottom.

Then put the bottom one on top. If the problem follows the top coil then replace it. (bottom cyl. not fireing now)

If the top cylinder still does not fire with good bottom coil. The problem is with power pack.

Good Luck!

I would like to see a picture of the black box you mentioned. I have an 89 50 & think the setup is the same. The coil is the only ingition part not located under the flywheel. The stator & powerpack is under the flywheel. Does the motor have T&T?

Dave, I guess the last mechanic to work on this engine modified it. The part I was suspecting was a power pack is. I looked up the part #(175316) and it was identified as a power pack. Could you elaborate on what a T&T is.

Just want to make sure. Take the wires that connect to the ignition coil comeing from the power pack and switch then from top to bottom. If the problem is reversed( bottom coil now not fireing) the coil is bad. Do I have to switch the spark plug wires as well or leave them alone?

T&T is trim & tilt. You must not have T&T becusae it would be hard to locate the ingition components on the block somehwere. Make sure the plugs are out if you swap the coil leads unless you change plug wires too. I'd be interested to see what the underside of the flywheel looks like. Must be set up like and early mid 80's motor.
