I have a Gale 40 hp Serial 36X879040,Model GG18757B.(Sea King on case).I have a old outboard
motor book, however can't seem to pinpoint the numbers above in it. If anyone knows of a good service manual, the year of the motor, and the mix
ratio. Also any info on the reputation of this motor(worth sinking a dough into etc...)would be
great.

Rymar,Your motor is a 63. Basic design was around 20+years by then.
Properly cared for they are pretty much bullet proof.Parts are shared with E/J,some even available at NAPA.Mix 1/2 pt to a gallon. 1 gt.
when refilling a 6 gallon tank.
Pretty much a gas hog when compared to modern
2 strokes.But they run & run.

Hello Rymar
I just bought a 40 hp Gale 1961 for parts.
I thought the power head would fit on my 1960 johnson but the base are not the same,The Gale runs like a top,but no lower unit,Would you know if a evinrude lower unit will fit the gale?
The power head is the same as the johnson
but for the base. Good luck with yours,
river run

Spike thanks for the info, I was unable to get it started a couple of weeks ago no spark, replaced
coils, points and condensor's and wires. have spark now. but it still wil not fire. The spark looks weak. and if I hold the plug wire slightly off the plug it will try and fire. Any ideas?
I pretty sure I've got the coils mounted right.
River Run, I do not know if the lower units would swap out, Sorry Good Luck.
